The EV Transition: What It Means for Aftermarket Parts
Every conversation about the UK's EV transition eventually lands on the same anxious question in the aftermarket parts trade: if EVs have fewer moving parts, does that mean less business for us?
The short answer is no — but the shape of the business is changing fast, and the parts suppliers who adapt now will be the ones still standing in five years.
The ZEV Mandate Is Accelerating the Shift
The UK Government's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold by 2030 to be zero-emission, rising to 100% of both by 2035. The sale of petrol and diesel-only cars ends in 2030. As of June 2026, there are more than 121,000 public EV charging connectors across roughly 46,700 locations nationwide — infrastructure that keeps expanding regardless of the debate over pace.
Whatever your view on the timeline, the direction is set. The parts trade needs to plan around it.
Fewer Wear Items — But Not Fewer Parts
It's true that EVs eliminate entire categories of traditional wear parts: no exhaust systems, no traditional clutch or gearbox in most EVs, reduced brake wear from regenerative braking, and no timing belts, oil filters, or spark plugs.
For suppliers whose business model was built around servicing these categories, that's a genuine structural challenge. But it's only half the picture.
What EVs Need More Of
1. Suspension and Handling Components
EVs are heavier than their ICE equivalents due to battery weight — often 300-500kg heavier. This accelerates wear on suspension bushes and mounts, springs and dampers (higher load-bearing requirements), wheel bearings (increased load = faster wear), and tyres (higher rolling resistance requirements + weight = shorter tyre life).
This is a genuine growth category. EV-specific suspension components, designed for the weight distribution and torque characteristics of electric powertrains, are becoming a distinct product line rather than a crossover from ICE parts.
2. Thermal Management Components
Battery packs need precise thermal management. This creates demand for coolant pumps and lines specific to battery thermal loops, heat exchangers and radiators redesigned for battery cooling, and cabin heating components (EVs use heat pumps rather than waste engine heat, requiring different componentry).
3. Charging Accessories
An entirely new product category that didn't exist for ICE vehicles: home charging cables and adaptors, portable charging units, charging port covers and protection accessories, and cable organisers and storage solutions.
4. Styling and Performance Accessories
EV owners still want to personalise their vehicles: body styling kits (bumpers, side skirts, spoilers), wheels and tyres (increasingly EV-specific offset and load ratings), interior accessories and protection, and lighting upgrades (where road-legal).
Performance and styling demand doesn't disappear with electrification — if anything, EV owners skew toward younger, tech-forward demographics who are highly engaged with vehicle personalisation.
The Chinese Brand Factor
The UK EV market is seeing rapid expansion from Chinese manufacturers entering with competitively priced electric vehicles. This matters for the aftermarket trade in two ways: new OEM part numbers and fitment data (suppliers who move quickly to stock compatible parts for these new models gain first-mover advantage), and owners seeking aftermarket alternatives (as these vehicles age out of manufacturer warranty, and with potentially less-established dealer networks in the UK, owners will look to independent aftermarket suppliers).
Residual Values and the Used EV Parts Market
As more used electric vehicles enter the market, uncertainty around depreciation continues to influence the used parts ecosystem. A growing used EV parc means salvage and breakers' yards increasingly handle EVs (creating a secondary market for reclaimed EV-specific components), and older EVs needing aftermarket support (as first-generation EVs age past warranty, owners need affordable alternatives to dealer-only parts).
This is a market segment that barely existed five years ago and will only grow as the EV parc matures.
What This Means for Stock Strategy
If you supply or sell aftermarket parts, the practical takeaway is straightforward: don't wait for demand to disappear before you adapt — the mix is shifting now, not in 2030.
- Audit your current product mix against EV-relevant categories (suspension, thermal, charging accessories, styling)
- Build fitment data for popular EV models as they scale (Tesla Model 3/Y, MG4, BYD Seal, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5)
- Watch for Chinese brand market share growth and stock accordingly
- Position styling and performance accessories toward EV owner demographics — this crossover is real and growing
The vehicles are changing. The parts business isn't disappearing — it's redistributing. Suppliers who track that redistribution accurately will capture the growth. Those who wait for the "EV wave to pass" will find there's no passing — just a permanent shift in what the market needs.
